66092 Hindley track works 28.1.2024
Sunday the 28th January finds DB Cargo 66092 on the rear of an engineer’s train at Hindley in Greater Manchester. The train it is on the back of came down from Carlisle overnight the previous night loaded with new ballast ready for the work through Hindley station. This view was taken from the Deep Pit footbridge over the railway to the west of Hindley station. The recently raised and rebuilt road bridge at the station can be seen in the back ground, The bridge had to be raised as part of the electrification of the line from Wigan to Bolton. The date is 28.1.2024

Hoping to get on the train, Chesterfield 9.12.2023
At Chesterfield station on a Saturday before Christmas folk are wanting to take the train into Nottingham. It’s a two-car train, that has come from Leeds and is already packed with passengers standing. People are trying to get on for an afternoon and into an evening out in the city but it looks like they may have to wait for the next service, or go by bus or taxi. Christmas jumpers waiting for the train Chesterfield 9.12.2023.
At Chesterfield station on a damp Saturday before Christmas the lads have gathered for a trip into Sheffield or Leeds with some of them sporting their Christmas jumpers. The beers are out though the rest of the folk on the platform seem to prefer a cup of coffee.

The train service it is working is the 09.54 empty biomass freight train returning to Seaforth docks near Liverpool to be reloaded with imported wood chips, or Biomass to be transported to the Drax power station in Yorkshire for burning to produce electricity. The train it formed was the 08.43 departure from Doncaster to Scunthorpe which ran under head code 2P05 which arrived into Platform 1 here at Scunthorpe. It is now going to cross over to enter platform 2 to form the 09.48 departure back to Doncaster running under headcode 2P06. The train it is hauling is the 08.15 departure from the power station at Drax to the docks at the port of Immingham. Through the mizzle GBRF diesel locomotive 66749 approaches Morpeth on the East Cost Main Line in Northumberland on Friday the 15.9. 2023. The train service it is working is the 11.06 intermodal freight train from Mossend near Glasgow to the Doncaster I Port running under headcode or train reporting number 4E04. The loco carries the name “Christoper Hopcroft”.

Northern trains DMU passes bridge 41 on the Leeds and Liverpool canal in the Douglas valley of Lancashire to the west of Wigan. The unit is number 150142 and is working the 08.52 from Stalybridge to Southport.

DR98961 and DR98911 Rufford 10.7.2023 3Z19.
A multi-purpose vehicle train crosses the river Douglas at Rufford on the evening of the 10.7.2023 The train had been fitted on this occasion to spray weed killer along the railway lines. The service had left Wigan Springs Branch depot at 19.10hrs, travelled the line form Wigan to Preston. It then made this trip down the branch line to Ormskirk and return before travelling to Oxenholme and then returning to Wigan. The line runs between Preston and Ormskirk and at one time was a mainline route from Liverpool to Scotland. The track now is a single line branch with a single passing loop at Rufford, where the driver of this train has to collect the single line token to allow him to safely travel to Ormskirk and back. The train has two carriages or cars to it with the front one being numbered DB98961, and this one at the rear is DB98911 and the time is 21.00hrs.

To the west of Keighley in the Arie valley is a small village of Utley where there is a foot bridge over the railway that runs from Skipton and from Carlisle and Morecombe through Skipton to Leeds. The footbridge crosses the railway from Cemetery Lane and the view towards Keighley is as the train runs alongside Royd Street. This train is a Northern service from Bradford Foster Square to Skipton, having left Bradford at 13.11 hrs. The train is running under headcode or train reporting number 2S28

GBRF locomotive 66727 is being refuelled at the Castle cement works in Clitheroe before hauling the 17.15 departing train of loaded cement tankers to Carlisle on 19.4.2023. The locomotive carries the name ”Maritime One” and the train will be running under headcode or train reporting number 6C00.

Freightliner locomotive no 66601 nears the end of its journey from Leyland in Lancashire as it approaches at Great Rocks Junction in the Derbyshire peak district. The train it is working is the 06.35 hrs departure empty stone train from the recently reactivated sidings at the former British Leyland trucks site. The train is running under the train reporting number or headcode 6H66. Great Rocks junction is near Tunstead, not far from Buxton in the Derbyshire quarry area where the wagons will be reloaded ready for the next delivery into the aggregates supply chain. 15.2.2023

Cw 8173 GBRF 66799 at Briggs Ground Frame with 4H61 15.2.2023.
GBRF locomotive no 66799 is running around its train at Briggs Ground Frame near the Hindlow quarries in the Derbyshire peak district. The train it has brought in was the 10.35 hrs departure empty stone train from Small Heath in Birmingham. The locomotive has now run around its train of wagons and is now going to reverse onto the train and propel it back into the loading point off the quarry to be reloaded. The Briggs ground frame refers to the leavers that are used to change the points on this section of railway, rather than having a full signal box for just one or two sets of points. This locomotive was imported from Europe in August 2021 and now carries the name “Modern Railways” named after the monthly magazine of that title. 47712 Balshaw Lane 8.2.2023 5P55 Test run.
Locomotive services limited locomotive no 47712 “Lady Diana Spencer” passes Balshaw Lane Junction on the West Coast Main Line on 8.2.2023. The train it is pushing is a short rake passenger carriages that have been repainted in a old Scot Rail livery. At the front of the train is a carriage that has been adapted with a driving cab at one end, from which the driver is controlling the train and the locomotive. The train is on a trail run from Crewe to Preston and return, having come straight up the West Coast Main Line and will return down the WCML leaving it at Warrington to go back to Crewe through Chester. The locomotive will be pushing for most of the way as once the train got to Preston it was turned on the triangle of tracks at Farrington Curve junction. The train left Crewe at 13.05hrs, this being the 2nd trip of the day, the first being a Crewe to Preston trip in the morning. It arrived back at Crewe on this trip at 16.49 hrs running under head code or train reporting number 5P55. Running for the train, 777049 at Kirkby 23.1.23
The first use in passenger carrying service of the new trains for Merseyrail happened on Monday the 23rd of January 2023. The train left Liverpool Central as the 10.50 hrs service to Kirkby and then formed the 11.14hrs service from Kirkby back to Liverpool Central. Here the train is just about to start its journey back to Liverpool as a lady makes a dash along the platform to get aboard. The new trains are initially been brought into use on the Kirkby line as it is the shortest route they will use and is near the maintaince depot at Kirkdale so if there are any teething problems they should be able to be sorted out quickly. The plan is then to start using them on the Ormskirk line, before going on to the Southport and Wirral lines. 777049 arrives at Kirkby 23.1.2023

DB Cargo’s diesel locomotive departing from the signal box at Rainford Jct signal box on 10th May 2016 on the line between Wigan and Kirkby.

The locomotive is about to enter the single track section of line that runs from here past the sidings to Kirkby.

The locomotive was on a driver road learning trip from Wakefield to the Potter Group sidings at Knowsley near Kirkby. These training runs are in preparation for a freight service to start running in the future that will carry containerised non recyclable rubbish from the Liverpool area to Teesside to burn in a energy plant.

DB Cargo diesel locomotive 66009 has just passed under Ash Street, the A5267, as it leaves Southport on the Southport to Wigan line on Wednesday the 31th of August 2022. The locomotive is working a driver route learner or refresher service that started from Knottingley in West Yorkshire and has been to Southport and now is on its way back. The locomotive is running under headcode or train reporting number 0Z76. Between the two tracks here used to be a passenger station, called Southport St Lukes, which was closed in September 1968 and there is not a lot of evidence left of it now. Start made on Headbolt lane station 17.8.2022.
A new railway station is being built at Headbolt Lane in Kirkby on Merseyside. It will be on this line from Kirkby to Wigan Wallgate to the east of the existing Kirkby station that at present is the end of the Merseyrail electrified line from the centre of Liverpool. The Wigan service starts from here at using diesel trains. Beyond the station site a bridge over county road is being replaced, so there are no tracks in place and the railway has been closed from the 18th July 2022 to the 29th August 2022, with buses replacing Northern trains between Kirkby and Rainford. The station is planned to be opened in 2023. The track running to the buffers on the left hand side of this image is the head shunt siding for the rubbish trains that carries some of Liverpool’s domestic rubbish to Teesside for incinerating. Colas diesel locomotive no 70812 passes Holme Chapel to the south east of Burnley with the bitumen trail from Lindsay Oil refinery in Lincolnshire to the former docks at Preston. The train left Lindsay at 02.51 hrs and arrived in Preston at 07.50 hrs. The train is here coming down the gradient after breasting the summit of the line between Todmorden and Burnley at Copy Pit. Holme Chapel is a small village in East Lancashire that is strung out along the A646 road that travels from Burnley to Todmorden. It is within the parish of Cliviger to the southeast of Burnley. The village of Holme Chapel along with other villages along the road are within a valley of the River Calder with Thieveley Scout being on one side of the valley and Long Causeway below Worsthorne and Strperden Moors and is overlooked by the Coal Clough Wind farm. Long Preston is a Yorkshire Dales village on the railway that runs to and from Leeds to Carlisle or Lancaster and Morecambe. GBRF Class 60 locomotive no 60026 breasts the top of the gradient as it approaches Bryn between St Helens and Wigan. The train it is hauling consist of loaded stone box wagons that have come from the quarries at Shap in Cumbria on an overnight service that has been to Tuebrook sidings near Liverpool and are then tripped from there to Ashton in Makerfield. Shunter 08 375 bringing loaded steel wagons from Boston Docks to the exchange sidings at Sleaford sidings on Friday the 11.2.2022. The train is crossing the London Road level crossing. The wagons have been loaded in Boston docks and this trip working has just crossed the swing bridge across the River Witham and will form the 20.23hrs train from Sleaford sidings to the Wolverhampton Steel terminal operated by DB Cargo with locomotive 60 039. The shunter is a former British railways one now owned by the Port of Boston. DCrail diesel locomotive’s 60055 hauls a train of empty stone wagons along the Midland main line approaching Humble Lane bridge near Cossington in Leicestershire of 10.2.22 This train running under head code, or train reporting no 6Z57 had started from Burton on Trent west yard sidings in Derbyshire and was on its way to yard at Wembley in north London. 56091 arrives at Kirkdale 0Z56 16.11.2021
DC Rail’s diesel locomotive no 56091 arrives at the Kirkdale maintaince depot on Merseyside on Tuesday the 16.11.2021. The locomotive carries the name “Driver Wayne Gaskell” This was a light engine move from Warrington Bank Quay to Kirkdale and then returned from Kirkdale to Chaddesden sidings near Derby. 56049 and 56113 at Castle Donington junction 24.10.2021
Colas diesel locomotive’s no’s 56049 and 56113 pass Castle Donington junction on the freight only between Stenson junction near Willington and Sheet stores junction near long Eaton. 769 442 passes Burscough Bridge 13.2.2020
One of Northern’s “new” flexi units passes Burscough Bridge on 13.2.2020. This is believed to be the first time this type of train has been out on the Southport to Wigan line. These are electric multiple units that have been moved up from the south of the country and been reengineered with a diesel engine added to the electrical capability of the train. The plans are to use them along this line, running on the diesel engines until they get to Wigan or Bolton where they will be able to be powered from the overhead electric cables to run onto Manchester The service had left Wigan Springs Branch depot and travelled to Southport and is now on its return journey to Wigan. The train had left Springs Branch at 10.08, arrived in Southport at 10.57 and passed Burscough Bridge at 11.10. It ran under headcode or train reporting no 3Z51. 66793 6S94 at Hoghton Bottoms 13.10.2021.
GBRF diesel locomotive no 66793 makes its way to the top of the hill on a gloomy autumn morning at Hoghton Bottoms pulling its load of aviation fuel towards Scotland. The train is the 04.28 hrs departure from the yard at Wembley in London to the B P oil terminal in Prestwick in Scotland. Hoghton Bottoms is behind Hoghton Tower in Lancashire and the train will continue its journey north on the Settle and Carlisle railway. The service is running under headcode or train reporting number 6S94 and in the path of what is usually the china clay train to the paper mills of Irvine. 66149 leaves Springs Branch with 6F47 6.8.2021
DBS diesel locomotive no 66149 has just left the former Springs Branch locomotive shed near Wigan. The engine has been to the part of the site which is now a wagon repair depot and has collected two box wagons that have been repaired. To access the West Coast Main Line again to return the wagons to the yard at Arpley at Warrington for the wagons to again start earning money the train has run up onto the relatively new reversing sidings that where constructed as part of the up grade of the shed to accommodate and service northern trains passenger units and has reversed out onto the main line and is now setting off back to Warrington. The train runs on a Fridays only under headcode 6F47 and is timetabled to leave here at 12.03hrs but today it ran a bit early departing at 10.29 hrs.

390 006 passes Astley signal box 1S48 2.4.2021. Avanti West coast Pendolino passes Astley signal box on Good Friday 2021. The train service it is working is the 08.24 hrs departure from London Euston to Glasgow Central, running under headcode 1S48. The train was diverted via Manchester and across Chat Moss to pass Astley due to engineering works on the West Coast Main Line. 37423, 37038 and 57002 pass Balshaw Lane 30.6.2021.
Three of DRS, Direct Rail services, locomotives travel northwards along the West Coast Main Line beyond at Balshaw Lane junction The front locomotive is number 37 423 which carries the name “Spirit of the Lakes”, the 22nd unnamed one is 37038 and the rear one is no 57002, named “Rail Express”. They are on a “light” engine move from the company’s depot at Crewe Gresty Bridge to its main maintaince facility at Kingmoor near Carlisle. Logs at Ribble head 66305 21.6.2021
DRS diesel locomotive no 66305 crosses the Ribblehead viaduct on the Settle and Carlisle on 21.6.202. The train it is pulling is the 12.58 hrs departure from Carlisle Yard to Chirk loaded with logs for the Kronospan chipboard factory at Chirk. This train is normally pulled by a locomotive from the Colas fleet but on this occasion came from the Direct Rail Services fleet. The train was about 80 minutes late from its planned times so may be there had been a problem with the Colas loco that was planned to originally power it?

Northern’s “new” flexi units arrives in a sunny Southport on 26.4.2021 The testing of these trains has restarted on the Southport to Wigan line. These are electric multiple units that have been moved up from the south of the country and been reengineered with a diesel engine added to the electrical capability of the train. The service had left Wigan Springs Branch depot at 09.48 and worked to Southport, then to Stalybridge, and back to Southport before returning to Springs Branch in Wigan. The unit is arriving in the sea side town of Southport with the Mersey travel electric units using the platforms to the left of the station. After long delays Northern’s “new” flexi trains have entered passenger carrying service on the line from and to Southport from the Manchester area. This was the first retinue earning service, the 06.17 hrs departure from Southport to Alderley Edge seen here calling at Burscough Bridge at 06.30hrs on a misty May morning. According to Real Times Trains the service arrived 29 minutes late at Alderley Edge. 66710 6E24 passes 66746 on 4F62 at Lister Lane Bridge in Liverpool 7.5.21.
GBRF diesel locomotive no 66710 has left the docks at Seaforth in Liverpool as GBRF 66746 is on its way into the docks. The picture was taken from Lister Drive bridge in the east of the city on the freight only line between Edge Lane Junction and the docks at about 17.25hrs 66710 is at the head of the 17.17 train carrying bio mass wood pellets to Drax power station, running under head code 6E24. 66746 heading into the docks had come from the East Midlands gateway freight near Derby with a train of intermodal containers. 4S38 DB Cargo diesel locomotive no 66102 is leaving the docks at Seaforth in Liverpool. The train is an intermodal one and is on the way to Mossend near Glasgow. The train is running under the head code of 4S35 and left Seaforth at 14.24. The locomotive is still in the livery of English, Welsh and Scottish railways, EWS.
