On Wednesday the 21st of August 2024 the tides were right to allow one of the biggest ships to arrive in Preston Docks there had been for a while.
The River Trader arrived carrying a 200 ton transformer that was to continue it’s onward journey to the National Grid site at the bottom of Howick Cross Lane in Penwortham.
The transformer was unloaded from the ship and then on Sunday the 25.8.2024 it was transported by road by Allelys Heavy Haulage to the site in Penwortham.
The first picture shows the ship in the dock not long after arriving.

The railbus was built in Germany in 1958 by Waggon und Maschinenbau for British Railways. The Ribble steam railway runs the railbus on a Wednesdays in August and run’s steam trains over the weekends. It was quite a tight turn and some one was keeping his eye on the job to make sure it went round without causing any damage. They are moving the transformer that had arrived by ship on the previous Wednesday to the National Grid electrical site at Howick Cross in Penwortham on this Sunday morning. They are passing the former Dick Kerr, English Electric and then British Aerospace factory, now used by a range of businesses. The transformer weighs 200 tonnes and at times during the move there was one tractor unit pulling it and one pushing at the rear. Alleys heavy haulage team are moving a large electrical transformer across the River Ribble in Preston. They are moving the transformer that had arrived by ship on the previous Wednesday to the National Grid electrical site at Howick Cross in Penwortham on this Sunday morning. The convoy is crossing the 3 arch stone bridge, know as Penwortham New bridge, over the River Ribble that used to be one of the main roads into Preston. It was replaced as the main route into the city with the opening of the Guild Way Bridge in the 1980’s.
